On behalf of the National Program Committee of the Korean American Scholarship Foundation (KASF), we invite you to an Anti-Asian racism virtual workshop scheduled for Saturday, July 10th from: 

• 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM EDT
• 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM CDT 
• 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM MDT
• 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM PDT

While the media focus on anti-Asian racism might have abated, we know that racism continues to be a struggle in our community. This workshop is designed to teach anti-racist practices that we can use in our personal and professional lives. We will learn from Dr. Shinwoo Choi and Shane Carlin (bios below) about racial microaggressions, how to cope, and where to find resources. We will also have time in breakout groups to share our experiences in a safe environment.

BIO: Dr. Shinwoo Choi 
 
Dr. Shinwoo Choi is an Assistant Professor of the School of Social Work at Texas State University. Dr. Choi earned a Master of Science in Social Work with a concentration in policy practice from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Choi has various practice experiences including program coordinator at the Group Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Latina immigrant mothers, clinical social work volunteer at public middle school, and clinical research coordinator at the Public Health department. Her research interests include: Examining the detrimental effects of racial microaggression among racial minority individuals and coping mechanisms; exploring challenges in terms of natural disaster preparedness among individuals with vulnerabilities such as mental/physical health challenges; and, language barrier and lack of resources due to poverty.

BIO: Shane Carlin
 
Shane Carlin is the Founder and President/CEO of Asian Student Achievement, a non-profit company that helps Asian high school and college students advance in their future. Shane has over 20 years of experience in higher education administration. His career has been in fundraising and Student Affairs where he was the Director of Development for Student life and Scholarships at Northwestern University, and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Advancement at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Shane has also served as the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA). He is a Korean American adoptee and grew up in Kentucky. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Communications from the University of Kentucky and his Master of Science in College Student Personnel from Miami University. He is also experienced in mentoring students in international settings. He has engaged in advising, and fundraising activities overseas for the University of Illinois in various cities such as Beijing, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Shanghai. Shane is a very experienced public speaker. He has been invited to speak at universities and TEDx Lakeshore East in 2011.

We are excited to invite you to KASF’s first-ever virtual, pub-style team trivia night on Tuesday, July 20th, 2021 from 8-9 p.m. PDT. Three engaging rounds of trivia will cover current events, food and drink, and a custom round on Korean cultural influences in the U.S.! This is an opportunity to not only experience an hour of fun for a good cause, but also to reconnect with others from the KASF community (past recipients, board members, donors, etc.). Registration is $10, with the proceeds going to KASF (https://www.kasf.org/). Plus, there is a PRIZE: the winning team will receive $500! Feel free to invite your friends/family to put together your own team, or we can assign you to a team (you can specify your team/team name when you register).
